3.1 How Does My Money Habitude® Affect My
Relationships?
Estimated Time: 30 minutes
Materials Needed: Paper, pencils, copies of Relationship Habitudes worksheet (optional)
Summarize the Following in Your Own Words:
You may have heard the saying, “Friendship and money don’t mix!” Whether this saying is true or not, you’ll
discover that some type of relationship issue is often sprinkled into the mix. Regardless of your age, your
race, or how much money you make, financial issues are one of the most common sources of conflict between
individuals and among families. Our relationship with money is often a good indicator of our relationship
with others.
In romantic relationships, the money habitudes both individuals bring to the relationship can become a
source of conflict. Although disagreements over money are likely to happen in most romantic relationships,
couples in healthy relationships learn skills to manage those conflicts in ways that strengthen, rather than
damage, the relationship.
To help your students identify how money habitudes might be impacting their different relationships
have them complete the Relationship Habitudes worksheet or engage them in the alternative group activity.
Once they complete the worksheet, lead them in a discussion on some of the insights they may have gained.
