Lesson 12 The Ongoing Journey
Why We Do This
The goal of Lesson 12 is to integrate previous lessons, focusing on building your brain and committing
to a healthy lifestyle. We conclude with exercises designed to reinforce the skills and processes covered
throughout the course.
The success of Mind Matters: A Map for Thriving relies on developing new habits and fostering a positive
growth mindset. Achieving a focused, calmer, and less reactive life takes time. This program introduced new
skills and repeated self-soothing techniques in each lesson. This repetition is intended to build participants’
confidence and provide a reliable means of stress reduction.
To support lasting change, participants will create a Personal Agreement, a personalized commitment
to the healthy habits and skills they choose to continue. By putting their intentions in writing and sharing
them with a peer, participants take an important step toward making these practices a natural part of their
everyday lives. Building on the growth mindset work from Lesson 6, participants will discover the Power of
“Yet” through the metaphor of the redwood tree. Like a redwood that grows slowly but steadily through
drought, fire, and storm, each participant has the capacity to face challenges with resilience, knowing that
not being there yet is simply part of the journey.
Each participant will create a Game Plan, committing to the daily practice of the skills learned. Following
this, participants will have the opportunity to use the Mind Matters Track It to a Habit tool to track the
frequency of their practice. This tool helps develop habits by recording the use of learned skills and
processes in everyday life. Similar to athletes who track their training to improve performance, participants
who track their healthy mind activities are more likely to increase their frequency and benefit from them.
The class concludes with one final self-soothing skill: the Anchor Object. This object serves as a reminder of
the lessons learned, creating a positive association to carry forward.

integrating these practices into daily life.

Habit tool to monitor frequency and build new habits.
