This work was made possible by the vision and dedication of Kay Reed, Executive Director of The Dibble
Institute®, and the Board of Directors, who expanded their mission to include trauma recovery. Kay and her
team championed our vision from the beginning. During COVID, Kay encouraged us to offer a free online
class, which Dixie Hirschi and I facilitated weekly with thousands of participants. That class is now available as
Mind Matters On-Demand. Aaron Larson contributed deeply to production Carol Frame brought creativity and
heart to the design. The entire Dibble team poured their talent, energy, and insight into making Mind Matters
dynamic and accessible. Jessica Henzog-Hall (ACEs Indiana Coalition) offered valuable insights for this latest
edition. Particular thanks also go to Harmony Jacobson, Marlene Menlove, and Janet Pozmantier.
I also carry deep appreciation for pioneers like Dr. Robert Anda and Dr. Vincent Felitti, whose ACEs research
exposed the hidden cost of trauma and laid the foundation for this work. When I was starting out, Bill
Ryland of Koinonia Homes for Teens called Mind Matters the best curriculum he had ever reviewed. That
encouragement gave me courage.
This project has also been deeply personal. My own history of adversity as well as the resilience I’ve found
through the love and support of others shaped every page of this work. To my husband Charles, my partner
in life and research—your devotion carried me through this curriculum and through my 14-year battle with
multiple myeloma. This book is as much yours as it is mine.
Together, we are building resilience, creating healing, and shaping a more hopeful future.
With gratitude,
Carolyn
